Lifeboat (May 14-15, 2010)

As the starship Andromache explodes, a handful of passengers find themselves locked into a desperate struggle to survive and accomplish their sensitive mission...

Welcome to Lifeboat, a unique LARPing experience run by Foam Brain Games (under license from Gordon Olmstead-Dean). Lifeboat is a game about intensity and immersion - the game will run straight through the scheduled time periods. Both food and sleep, as would be appropriate in such a situation if it really occured, will be provided during the game.

It is reasonably expected that everyone will more or less remain in character for the length of the game. The gamespace will be set up to resemble one of the Andromache's lifeboats, and includes such ammenities as a bathroom (which we swear works!), an airlock (to keep that scary space thing out), and a floor (to, well, keep people up).

Lifeboat is a fully plotted game - it has significant political and interpersonal plots, along with other in-game goals. Character sheets are fairly long and include considerable characterization and goal information (there are also a bunch of bluesheets containing information about the fairly hard SF universe in which the game takes place).

We're pretty sure people are going to have some questions, so I'm trying my best to answer them below.

Please Note: Before you sign up for Lifeboat, PLEASE talk to a GM about it. We want to make sure you know what you're in for before you agree to play this game.

FAQ

  1. How long is Lifeboat scheduled to last? Lifeboat will take somewhere between 23 and 26 hours to play, starting at 8pm on Friday, May 14th 2010 and ending sometime on Saturday. It will be followed by SOMETHING - either a dead dog or a party, we're not sure.
  2. Where is Lifeboat going to be located? We will be running Lifeboat in Andrew Zorowitz's basement in Troy. Rides from the RPI campus will be organized before the game.
  3. How much does Lifeboat cost? Because we will be providing food for the entire game, along with some other expensive single-use props, we are asking for $35 from players to cover Lifeboat.
  4. Is Lifeboat safe? Yes - we believe that the Foam Brain Games run of Lifeboat will be safe (as were the first 2 runs). While all LARPs (and all activities) carry some risk of injury, we believe that this game is rather safe (at least as safe as camping would be ). We, do, however need your help. Please make sure you answer the health questions on the casting questionnaire honestly and truthfully, even about things you wouldn't normally expect to be an issue in LARPing (allergies, etc).
  5. Should I play in Lifeboat? To be honest, that is a very hard question. This game is NOT like other LARPs we've run or other LARPs we are likely to run in the future. If this doesn't sound like the game for you, that's fine. Seriously. A lot of the theme of this game is being terrified, annoyed, uncomfortable and\or bored in character. To be perfectly honest, *I* probably wouldn't play in this LARP. I think that there are enough people who are interested in a very heavily character driven and emotion driven game that its worth doing, but, this game isn't for everyone, and we'll be running plenty of other cool LARPs. Seriously.
